In 1570, Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius published the first modern atlas (the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum). He didn't draw every map himself. He gathered the work of cartographers across Europe, edited it into a single definitive volume, and named every contributor by hand. Eighty-seven cartographers in the first edition. One hundred and eighty-three by the last.
